She was a selfless, caring mother, who put the needs of her children before herself. Um Chon had an unforgettable, wholehearted laugh that was warm with affection. She made the best Gal-bee (Korean BBQ short-rib) in the world - Michelin star worthy.
She was nicknamed Hallelujah by the churchgoers in the town where she ran her restaurant in Korea. Although she was a buddhist at the time, she opened up her restaurant at 5:30 every morning to provide passersby with steaming cups of roasted barley tea to keep them warm on their long walks to church service in the winter. Um Chon often made buns to feed school children whose parents could not afford to pack them lunch.
A private family-only memorial service will be held for Um Chon at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington St., Canton on Monday, 9 - 10am, followed by interment at the Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
