Sheila A. McCabe, a cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 93 in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Born on March 26, 1932, in Boston, MA, Sheila was the daughter of the late John and Dymphna Stafford and grew up in the close-knit community of South Boston surrounded by her many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sheila's life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to family, faith, and community. As a proud graduate of Gate of Heaven High School, she carried the values of her upbringing in South Boston throughout her life. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. McCabe, and together they built a life rich in love and laughter. Sheila's devotion to her family knew no bounds. She was the loving mother of Maryann Morrice and her husband Charles, Robert McCabe Jr. and his wife Joanne, Sheila Gendrolius and her husband Paul, Paul McCabe and his wife Karen, Michael McCabe and his wife Karen, Edward McCabe and his wife Sue, Eileen Calvi and her husband Paul, Kate Cunningham and her husband Tom, and she held dear the memory of her late son Joseph McCabe.
Sheila's love extended beyond her immediate family to her siblings, Brendan Stafford and his wife Joanne of Dennisport , the late Joseph Stafford and his wife Eleanor of Dennis, and the late Dymphna Stafford. Her role as a grandmother to 18 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 11 great-grandchildren was one she embraced with joy and pride. She was predeceased by her grandson, Joseph McCabe.
Professionally, Sheila served as a dedicated secretary for Milton Public Schools, where she was known for her efficiency, warm smile, and the kindness she extended to all.
A resident of Canton for 63 years, Sheila's involvement in her community was a reflection of her deep faith. She was an active member of St. Oscar Romero Church, where she nurtured her spiritual life and offered support to others. Her participation in the Canton Catholic Women's Club and the St. Gerard Majella prayer group were among the many ways she exercised her faith in action.
Sheila's interests and talents were diverse and brought joy to many. In her younger years, she was part of a singing group at Marion Manor in South Boston, where her beautiful voice and spirited performances were cherished.
Sheila A. McCabe's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. Her life's journey, marked by the bonds she forged and the lives she uplifted, will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her. Sheila's spirit, characterized by her humor and vivacious personality, will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were graced by her presence.
As we bid farewell to Sheila, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that will forever be remembered.
Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, Sunday, April 13th from 2-6 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Oscar Romero on Monday, April 14th at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
