Russell Sullivan Obituary

Russell J. Sullivan, age 99, formerly of Canton, whose life was as full and rich as the family he adored, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025 at the Dr. Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree, Massachusetts. Born in the heart of Dorchester, MA, Russell's journey through life was marked by love, dedication, and a joy for the simple pleasures that knit the fabric of everyday existence. Russell, a World War II Marine Veteran, served in Iwo Jima and witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag.

Russell's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Boston schools, which laid the foundation for his later studies at Wentworth Institute in Boston. A true son of Dorchester, he carried the spirit of his neighborhood throughout his life, later planting his roots in Canton for 40 years. The golden years of his retirement were spent basking in the warmth of Barefoot Bay, FL, where he continued to make lasting memories with friends and family.

In his professional life, Russell was known as a skilled plumber, dedicating many years of service to Local #12 in Boston. His commitment to his craft was as steadfast as his loyalty to those he worked with, and he left behind a legacy of hard work and integrity.

Russell's family was his pride and joy. He was the beloved husband of the late Evelyn (Ryan), whose memory he held close to his heart. Together, they brought into the world 14 children: Evelyn Sullivan of Braintree, Russell Sullivan of Easton, Donald Sullivan of West Bridgewater, Nancy Pirelli of New Hampshire, Michael Sullivan of Plymouth, David Sullivan of Hull, Donna Manning of Plainville, Shirley Sullivan of Foxboro, Karen Ducharme of Florida, Janice Sullivan of Norfolk, Joe Sullivan of Hanover, Paula Cobb of Easton, Mark Sullivan of Berkley, and the late Dianne Poirier, whom Russell loved deeply. As a father, he was a guiding light and a steadfast presence, instilling values of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of family.

Though he was preceded in death by his siblings Gladys Hanlon, James Sullivan, Paul Sullivan, and Claire McCarthy, Russell's legacy lives on through his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit, his love for life, and his boundless capacity for compassion.

Russell's involvement with the Knights of Columbus Council #2095 was a testament to his belief in community and service. His enjoyment of simple pastimes such as playing softball, engaging in friendly card games, and participating in Bocce reflected his appreciation for camaraderie and good-natured competition.

Above all, Russell cherished the moments spent with his family. Whether it was a grandchild's birthday party, a holiday gathering, or a quiet afternoon, these were the times when Russell felt most at home. His love for sports was more than just a hobby; it was a way to connect with friends and family, sharing in the triumphs and heartaches of his favorite teams.

Russell's departure leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his memory will continue to inspire. His life was a testament to the beauty of dedication—to one's family, to one's work, and to one's community. In every smile he shared, every story he told, and every hand he held, Russell J. Sullivan left an indelible mark of warmth and generosity.

As the sun sets on a life well-lived, we remember Russell not with sorrow, but with immense gratitude. For in knowing him, we have all been touched by his gentle kindness, his unwavering strength, and his enduring love. Though he has passed from this world, the essence of who he was will forever be a part of the lives he so deeply affected.

Rest in peace, Russell J. Sullivan. Your legacy will continue to shine brightly through the generations, as a beacon of love and family unity.
