Robert Emde Obituary

Robert J. Emde, affectionately known as Bob to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024, at Milton Hospital. Born in Dorchester, MA, Bob was a man whose presence was characterized by his loving and intelligent nature. He was the beloved husband of Ida P. (Kilduff), with whom he shared a life full of laughter and cherished moments.

Bob's journey began as the son of the late John Emde and Helen (Welch). He grew up in a bustling household and was the brother of Helen Foley of Mattapan, Edward Emde of Wilmington, and the late John, George, and Gerald Emde. Bob grew up in Dorchester, where he developed a foundation of resilience, camaraderie and pride that he carried with him throughout his life.

Bob was a proud graduate of Boston Technical High School. His thirst for knowledge and self-improvement led him to take several college courses, enhancing his expertise in the Financial and Banking Industry. Bob's dedication to his country was evident through his service as a proud Veteran of the Army National Guard, a chapter of his life he reflected on with great pride.

Professionally, Bob was a respected Vice President at the Bank of Boston. He served at “The Bank” for over 27 years, starting out in the mailroom and moving through a variety of positions and promotions, including Information Technology, Investments, and Compliance. He moved over to the software side of the banking industry, spending another 10+ years as a Senior Vice President at SunGard, where he was affectionately known as "Doc Emde" because of his intricate knowledge of investment operations."

He also served in a leadership capacity on several banking industry committees and organizations. After his retirement, he continued to share his wealth of knowledge as a private consultant in banking and security systems. His professional life was marked by integrity and the respect of his colleagues and clients alike.

Bob’s zest for life extended beyond his professional endeavors. He was an avid golfer, relishing his weekly games in the Senior Men’s League every Wednesday. He loved fine dining and fine wine – his brain was an encyclopedia of restaurants for every occasion and every location - and the right wine for every meal. His commitment to community was reflected in his former membership in the Blue Hill Civic Association and his active participation in several Professional Associations throughout his career.

Most importantly, Bob cherished his role as a family man. He was the loving father of Maureen Harlan and her husband Ted of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Joseph Emde and his wife Laurel Gerdine of Concord, Christine Emde of Norwood, Eric Emde and his wife Kerry of Canton, and the late Linda A. Emde. Bob's wisdom and humor were a guiding light for his grandchildren—Brendan and Elizabeth Harlan; Cameron, Sophie, Chelsea, and Colton Emde-Gerdine; and Laura and Michael Emde. His legacy of love and guidance will continue to live on through them.

Bob's departure has left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of dedication, the importance of family, and the joy of pursuing one's passions. He will be remembered not just for his accomplishments but for the warmth and kindness he extended to everyone around him.

As we bid farewell to Robert J. Emde, we celebrate a life well-lived. His memories will continue to inspire and comfort us as we hold him close in our hearts. Bob's journey may have come to a close, but the stories and love he shared will resonate for generations to come.
