Paul F. McCarthy “Paulie”, age 80, of Taunton, formerly of Charlestown passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 18th after a brief illness. Born in Boston, he was raised in Charlestown and graduated from Charlestown High School, where he played varsity hockey and was a member of the Charlestown High Drum and Bugle Corps. After graduating from Charlestown High, Paul began his professional career at The Boston Globe. He went on to work for Western Electric and Bell Telephone Company (“Ma Bell”).
Early in his life, Paul loved to spend time skiing at Cannon Mountain with his family and celebrating après ski at The Horse and Hound and the Village Steak House in Franconia. He met his wife Claire at The 99 Restaurant on Friend Street in Boston before a Bruins game. Paulie and Clairie (as they were affectionately known to family and friends) were an amazing couple who loved to spend time with dear friends in Falmouth at the Nimrod, The Flying Bridge, and the Quarterdeck. After Claire passed, Paul loved to meet his friends on Tuesdays and Thursdays at The 99 Restaurant in Foxboro, where he would strike up a great conversation with his buddies over a beer and a burger. Paul has long been compared to Radar O’Reilly from M.A.S.H. His signature sign-off will forever be embedded in our hearts – “Have a Happy!”
Paulie never missed a Charlestown Old Schoolboys reunion with his brothers and lifelong Charlestown friends, whom he cherished. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus in Charlestown.
Beloved husband of the late Claire McCarthy (Higgins). Predeceased in death by his parents Joseph W. McCarthy, Sr. and Gertrude H. (Dacey), his brother Charles P. McCarthy of Canton, his sister Helen M. Sullivan of Charlestown, and brother Joseph W. McCarthy Jr. of Walpole, Paul is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
