Maria Soares Obituary

Maria Albertina (Rodrigues) Soares (74), a cherished wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on February 11th at her home in Canton, MA surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on July 30, 1951, in the Island of Flores in the Azores, Maria's early years were spent in Portugal and later in Angola, Africa, where she and her beloved husband Antonio managed a cattle ranch with passion and dedication. Their shared journey led them to immigrate to the United States in 1976, where they would continue to build a life filled with love. Maria's devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her life.

In the United States, Maria worked as a technician in the electronics industry, a role she held with pride until her retirement at 68. Maria’s love for her family was unparalleled, especially her cherished grandchildren, with whom she shared an extraordinary bond. Her culinary skills were legendary; she was an amazing cook and baker, often sharing her recipes and love for the Food Network with those around her.

Fashion and elegance were Maria's hallmarks, always taking pride in her appearance, often telling her daughters and nieces that they should never go to a “festa” without putting on lipstick. She had a quiet and kind demeanor and went out of her way to help care for those around her including her cherished pets.  She never forgot a birthday and was always concerned about the health and wellbeing of her family and friends.  Maria's faith was a guiding light in her life. A devout Catholic, she found solace and strength in her nightly prayers of the rosary.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband of nearly 58 years, Antonio Cardoso Soares; her son Antonio Jose and his wife Sandra of Taunton; her daughter Paula and her husband Sam Somashekar of Westport, CT; and her daughter Kelly and her husband Gabriel Berardi of Canton, MA.  She also leaves behind 4 grandchildren Gisella, Gabriella, Dario and Xavier.  Maria’s legacy continues through her siblings: Victor Rodrigues of Rhode Island, Noel Rodrigues of Stoughton, Maria Fatima Ferreira of California, Leonor of Flores, Portugal, Joseph Rodrigues of Taunton and Maria Margarida Rodrigues of ME. Though she was predeceased by four of her siblings, her memory will be carried on by her loving family and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Relatives and friends invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Oscar Romero Church, Canton Saturday morning February 28th at 10:00 am.
