Karen Fillmore Obituary

Karen Ann (McLaughlin) Fillmore of Fort Meyers, FL and Mansfield, MA passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the Enclave of Franklin, Massachusetts. Born on April 12, 1946, in Boston, MA, Karen's life was marked by her dedication to family, her passion for education, and her love of the simple pleasures in life.

Karen was born to Francis and Anna McLaughlin and grew up in Canton, MA. She later moved to Mansfield, MA, where she would spend over 50 happy years. Karen began her work career in the insurance industry, working for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Boston, Massachusetts, and then at Penn Mutual in Tucson, Arizona, where she moved with her husband, C. Melvern (Mel) Fillmore who was in the US Air Force. Karen's journey in education began when she worked in the main office at the Fairbanks Public School System in Fairbanks, Alaska.   When Karen and Mel moved back to Massachusetts, she attended  Bridgewater State College, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to obtain a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College. Karen's educational path reflected her belief in the transformative power of knowledge, and she inspired countless students over the years.

For 15 years, Karen taught second grade at the Kennedy School in Canton, MA. She was a beloved teacher who brought out the best in her students with her gentle guidance and unwavering support.

Beyond her professional achievements, Karen's life was rich with interests and activities that brought joy to both herself and others. She enjoyed golfing with friends in Massachusetts as well as at Heritage Palms in Fort Myers, Florida, where she and Mel spent their winters. Karen's love of the outdoors extended to the summer months in Maine, where she found peace and rejuvenation in her walks and where she often sat on the dock with her sister Donna watching their children play. A devout attendee of St. Mary's Church in Mansfield, Karen's faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and comfort.

Karen's love story with her husband Mel spanned 59 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring partnership and mutual devotion. Together, they raised two daughters, Catherine (Michael) Douglas and Christine (Jeff) Brainson. Karen's role as a grandmother or “Nama”  to her grandsons Ryan and Luke Douglas was one of her most cherished roles. Karen was predeceased in death by her parents and her sister Donna Marie Crockett.

Karen's journey through life was marked by grace and resilience, even as she faced the challenges of Alzheimer's disease with courage. Her spirit, undiminished by the illness, continued to shine through her smile and the warmth of her presence. As we reflect on her beautiful life, we are reminded of the difference one person can make by simply being loving, thoughtful, and selfless.
