Obituary

Joseph Paul “Joe” McManus, Ph.D., 79, formerly of Mission Hill, passed away on April 11, 2023 in Biloxi Mississippi.

Joe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 16, 1943 to parents Henry and Mary McManus. The fifth of six children, he grew up in Mission Hill, attending Mission Grammar School and Mission Church High School before earning an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry from Stonehill College in Easton, MA; he continued his studies at the University of Cincinnati earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry.

Joe was a resident of Prospect, Connecticut for 40 years, and he worked as a research chemist at Uniroyal Chemical Company in Naugatuck, CT., where he received many honors for his work. Joe was a lifelong Boston Red Sox and later a diehard New England Patriots fan, enjoying going to Sox and Pats games with his son and nephews. Joe loved planting flowers and tomatoes for his family and friends and sharing the vegetables he grew in his many gardens. He received multiple awards from the Edgewater Neighborhood Association for the ‘Yard of the Month’. Joe enjoyed many summer days at Nantasket Beach with family and friends. He was an avid reader, enjoying Joyce, Hemingway, Steinbeck and many others. Joe enjoyed golf with family and friends, once shooting a hole in one at his nephew’s memorial golf tournament. He played in the Uniroyal Tennis League for many years, and enjoyed traveling, especially to Spanish speaking places to practice the language.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary McManus; and siblings, James McManus, Joan McManus, special cousins Billy McManus and Sister Mary Peter McManus and special Aunt Margaret “Peg” Dromey.

Survivors include his adored wife of 52 years, Amy T. McManus of Biloxi, MS; son, Daniel Paul McManus and his wife Sofya Karash of Saint Louis City, MO; siblings, Hank McManus of Shelter Island, NY, Mary McCarthy of Abington, MA, Phyllis Hayes of Canton, MA, sister-in-law Anne McManus of Millis, MA and dog, Gronk of Foxboro, MA. He was a beloved “Papa Joe” to his granddaughter, Galina Mae McManus of Saint Louis City, MO and “Uncle Joe” to dozens of nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Mission Church, in Boston, MA.
