John F. McCarthy Jr., a man of profound intellect and quiet dignity, passed away in Boston, MA on April 2, 2026. Born in Brockton, MA and raised in Weymouth, MA by his parents, John Sr. and Flora, he built a life anchored in an insatiable curiosity and a deep devotion to the pursuit of knowledge.
John’s academic journey was a testament to his discipline. He was exceptionally well-educated, earning his MD, a PhD in biophysics, a Master’s in Public Health, and an MBA. He spent his career navigating complex ideas with precision, contributing to significant scientific efforts as a medical researcher at Pfizer and later applying his talents to predictive modeling at Humana. While his professional accomplishments were vast, he was most defined by the thoughtful determination he brought to every aspect of his journey.
For 44 years, John was married to Sally McCarthy. Together, they shared a lifetime of milestones, raised their three children, and built the foundation of their family across several decades.
Music was the heartbeat of John’s home. He possessed an expansive love for all genres and "lovingly forced" his children to listen to a vast repertoire of music—a gift that remains a vivid and cherished part of their memories today. As his children grew into adulthood, his role shifted from teacher to philosophical companion; he relished long, deep conversations with them, dissecting the intricacies of science and politics.
After residing in Champaign, IL and Pittsburgh, PA, John settled in Canton, MA for the final 24 years of his life. He is survived by his children: Kristen Zubrow of Glastonbury, CT; Megan Beatty and her husband Adam of North Yarmouth, ME; and Brian McCarthy and his fiancée Emily Hedspeth of Monson, MA.
Perhaps his favorite title of all was "Grandude." He chose the name himself for his three grandchildren—Jacqueline Zubrow, Henry Beatty, and Theodore Beatty—simply because the traditional "Grandpa" never quite fit his personality. To them, he was a steady, cool, and loving presence who embodied the substance and depth he carried throughout his life.
Funeral services will be held privately for the family. In honor of John’s lifelong commitment to learning, donations may be made to any educational institute or endeavor of your choice. Above all, John and his family remained firm believers that the world simply needs more kindness; in his memory, they encourage you to perform a random act of kindness to brighten someone’s day
