Joan Courteau, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and strength, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, in Canton, MA, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 23, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, Joan's life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her passion for life, and her deep love for her family and friends.
Joan was the beloved daughter of Cornelius and Bridget Murphy and the loving wife of the late Paul Hyland Courteau of Brockton, and together they built a life filled with enduring memories. She was a devoted mother to her children, Suzanne Keane and her husband Dennis of Mashpee, Paul Courteau of Cape Cod, James Courteau and his wife Maria of West Bridgewater, Michelle Courteau of Quincy, Chris Courteau and his wife Marie of Brockton, and Andrea Courteau of Boston. Joan also treasured her role as a sister to Constance Brown of Cape Cod, and she fondly remembered her late siblings, Robert Murphy and Virginia Toti.
Joan's legacy extends through generations, touching the lives of her grandchildren, Cameron Keane, Christopher Courteau, Heather Courteau, John Holland, Bridget Courteau, Keith Courteau, Benjamin Hamlin, Patrick Hamlin, Kyle Courteau, Brendan Courteau, Charlie Courteau and Chloe Courteau. Her joy was multiplied with the birth of her great-grandchildren, Jay Holland, Aubrey Holland, Ethan Courteau, Logan Barthel, and Braeya Pierce who brought her immense happiness and pride.
Professionally, Joan spent a life long career as a dedicated telephone operator at ATT, where her warm voice and kind demeanor were a comfort to all who interacted with her. Her colleagues and friends within the industry remember her as a reliable and compassionate presence, always willing to lend an ear or offer support.
A devout Catholic, Joan's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She found peace and solace in her beliefs and was an active member of her church community. Her interests were a reflection of her vibrant spirit; she enjoyed antique shopping, finding treasures and stories in the relics of the past. Joan was also an avid reader, often losing herself in the pages of a good book. Sundays were usually spent with the family around the table for Sunday dinner.
Joan's passion for sports was evident in her unwavering support for the New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics. She shared this love with her children, creating cherished traditions and memories during game days. Joan also found joy in the early days, taking her kids to visit her beloved mother in South Boston, ensuring that the bonds of family remained strong, and the heritage of their forebears was honored and remembered.
Joan Courteau's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, and the golden threads of family and friendship. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, yet her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched. Joan's family finds comfort in knowing that she has been reunited with her beloved husband and is now at peace. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 12th at St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton at 10 a.m. Burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Canton.
