Janice Lee Hughes, a beacon of joy to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 80, at Good Samaritan. Born on November 30, 1944, in Chelsea, MA, Janice was the adored daughter of John and Evelyn Sanphy (LaCroix) and grew up in the warm, nurturing town of Norwood.
A graduate of Norwood High School, Janice was known for her sharp wit, compassionate spirit, and a heartwarming smile that could light up any room. Her academic journey was just the beginning of a life marked by dedication and majority of her service, which included her valued work at the Westwood School Department and at Fish-Line Seafood. Janice's professional life was characterized by her meticulous nature and her unwavering commitment to her family.
Janice's love story began with Stephen C. Hughes, to whom she was a beloved wife. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Her role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, raising her two sons, Kevin M. Hughes of Stoughton, and Keith W. Hughes, with his wife Brooke of Canton, with an abundance of love and unwavering support. She instilled in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of family. Additionally, she supported her sons as they grew up as a CYH hockey mom and undoubtedly was their number one fan.
As an adoring grandmother, Janice's joy was multiplied when she welcomed her grandchildren, Kayla and Colin, into the world. She embraced every opportunity to create lasting memories with them, whether it was through shared hobbies, storytelling, or simply spending quality time together. Janice's role as a grandmother was not just a title; it was an embodiment of unconditional love and the legacy of her nurturing spirit.
A resident of Canton since 1970, Janice was an integral part of her community and a devoted member of St. Oscar's Church. Her dedication to her community was evident in her involvement and the meaningful relationships she cultivated over the years.
Janice's zest for life extended to her many interests and hobbies. An avid boater with her husband, she relished the feeling of freedom and serenity that came from being on the water as well as relaxing on the beach. Her love for the sea also translated into a passion for cruises, where she explored new horizons and embraced the adventure of travel. Back on land, Janice enjoyed a variety of arts and crafts, expressing her creativity and leaving a trail of beauty wherever she went.
Her fondness for Cape Cod was no secret, as she frequented the shores to admire the iconic lighthouses that dotted the coastline. Other local areas she loved to visit were in New Hampshire and Maine enjoying the foliage and local foods. These visits were more than just a pastime; they were a reflection of Janice's love for the New England charm and the tranquility she found in nature.
She lived a life as vibrant and impactful as the lighthouses she so admired, guiding her family with love, lighting the way with her wisdom, and standing steadfast through the storms. Her legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew her, and the memories she created will continue to provide warmth and comfort to all.
Janice's life will be celebrated with a service that honors her remarkable journey and the indelible mark she left on this world. Her family will gather in remembrance of a life well-lived, a life that exemplified grace, love, and the beauty of a soul that truly cared for others. Janice will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever be a guiding light for her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
