Ellen L. Whitley, a cherished daughter, beloved sister, and adored aunt, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, in Weymouth, MA, at the age of 77. Born on October 30, 1947, in Boston, MA, she was the devoted daughter of the late George and Mary Whitley and grew up in the heart of Dorchester.
Ellen's early education was rooted in her hometown, where she attended St. Gregory High School. Her love for learning led her to pursue higher education at Emmanuel College, where she received her bachelor's degree. She furthered her dedication to academia by obtaining a Master's degree from Simmons College. Ellen's passion for knowledge and her commitment to education were evident throughout her career as a librarian at Chelsea High School, where she touched the lives of countless students and faculty with her wisdom and kindness.
A woman of faith and service, Ellen spent ten years as a sister of Notre Dame, where she lived out her commitment to spirituality and community. Her time with the sisters was a testament to her dedication to her beliefs and her desire to make a positive impact on the world.
Ellen was also a creative soul, with a love for painting, photography, and gardening. She was especially fond of reading and enjoyed sharing that love with her monthly book club discussions. Her artistic talents were a source of joy and inspiration to her family and friends. Her sharp wit and good sense of humor were the hallmarks of her personality, making every encounter with her a memorable one.
She is survived by her loving siblings, Mary Whitley of Scituate, Mark (Maryann) Whitley of Scituate, and Robert (Janet) Whitley of Canton. Ellen was predeceased by her siblings Joan Whitley and Paul Whitley. She was a cherished aunt to eight nieces and nephews, who will miss her guidance, laughter, and the stories she shared. Every holiday family gathering they would look forward to receiving a brown paper lunch bag inscribed with their name which included small treasures like a yo-yo, balsa airplane, silly putty, crayons and of course a sweet treat.
She was especially close to her youngest niece and nephew George and Michaela. George shares this in his words: To my sister and I Ellen was not just an aunt she was an extra parent a friend and the guiding light in our lives. From my earliest memories Ellen was there bringing us to see our grandparents joining us trick or treating or taking us to Castle Island. Rare were the weeks we didn’t see her. When I look back on my childhood and relive my favorite memories it's hard to find one that doesn't involve Ellen. For two decades even after we had moved away to college Ellen took us to see our Nana and Grandpa every week. We were blessed to not only share countless meals at their tables with her but see her devotion to them and her desire to care for them as they had for her. She was a shining example of living for others and taking care of your own. Her qualities are one I have tried to emulate and often find hard to match. Each of us has special people in our lives ones that influence who we are and who we try to be. Ellen was always that and will always be that for me.
Ellen's life was one of purpose, compassion, and laughter. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, and her contributions to the world of education will continue to inspire future generations. As we bid farewell to Ellen L. Whitley, we celebrate a life well-lived and the indelible mark she left on the world. Her spirit will forever be a beacon of light for her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
