Edward Michael Hathaway (Ed/Eddie) passed away on March 7th after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Ed was a loving and devoted father and husband, dedicated son, faithful brother, favorite uncle and good friend to many. He will be missed by all who loved him.
Ed’s greatest pride and joy were his sons, Edward and Patrick. Every decision he made was rooted in his love for them, and he worked tirelessly to provide them with a life full of adventure, learning, and care. He was also a loving son, deeply devoted to his parents, spending time with them so that they felt cherished and supported.
As a brother, Ed was a source of comfort and good company, always ready to help during difficult times. He especially enjoyed watching the Patriots with his brother Mark and his father (also named Ed), and going on hikes and travelling to Disney with his sister Trisha.
Ed graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 1979. He went on to earn a BS in business administration from Suffolk University in 1984. After working briefly in business he moved to the American southwest and found his true calling in his love for nature. He earned a BS in Environmental Science from Northern Arizona University in 1988. In 1989, Ed started working for the Environmental Protection Agency as a project manager in the Superfund Division. Over the next 36 years, he received numerous awards from EPA for his commitment to protecting the environment and public health. His last award was for Mentor of the Year.
Ed’s strong foundational knowledge in science and facilitation skills were highly valued at EPA. He had a remarkable ability to bring people together, even in the face of conflict. Whether working with colleagues, community members, other federal or state agencies, or opposing parties, he had a unique talent for finding common ground. His patience, diplomacy, and sense of fairness earned him the respect of all who worked with him.
Perhaps Ed’s greatest gift was to make all those he met feel welcome, accepted, understood and appreciated. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and stood by those who needed him. Over the course of his career, Ed’s colleagues became good friends and called themselves his “EPA family.” They were constantly present during his battle with pancreatic cancer and made his journey a little less difficult. Ed also developed strong friendships with colleagues from other federal and state agencies and supporting companies. He also developed lifelong friendships with those he met at Northern Arizona University. Even though his college friends were scattered around the world, they kept in contact. He greatly valued these friendships.
His reliability and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be profoundly missed by his sons, family, friends, dog (Koda), and all whose lives he enriched. While he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the forests he walked, the waters he loved, and the countless lives he touched.
Ed leaves behind his wife, Ann-Marie Burke, sons Edward Burke Hathaway and Patrick Burke Hathaway, his parents Edward and Mildred (Daly) Hathaway, siblings Carole, Mark, Patricia, Paul, David, and Steven Hathaway, aunts Helen Zanowski and Susan Daly, nieces and nephews Emelia, Ryan, Caitlyn, Noah (great-nephew), Daniel, Kevin, Matthew, Jessica, Maxine, Chester, Oscar, Michael, Daniel, Ian, Harrison, Brendan, Anna, and Jack ,and his dog Koda.
Visiting hours will held on Friday, March 14th, at Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 15th at St. Oscar Romero Parish in Canton at 10 a.m.
