Eduardo Tavares Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and immense love that we mourn the passing of Eduardo “Eddie” Tavares, a remarkable centenarian who graced this world with his presence for a full 100 years. Born on January 12, 1924, in Brava in the Cape Verde Islands, Eduardo embarked on his final voyage on February 28, 2024, in Newton, MA, surrounded by the love of his family.

Eduardo was the cherished son of the late João and Virginia Tavares and the devoted husband of the late Ana Tavares, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. He was a beloved patriarch, leaving behind a legacy through his daughters and their spouses, Yvonne & Yan Poh Loh of Singapore and Liz Tavares & Deedee Antonelli of Newton. His light will continue to shine in the lives of his grandchildren, Elaine, Melissa, and Isabella, and his great-granddaughter, Jaya.

In 1948, Eduardo set sail for a new life in the United States, settling first in Dorchester, MA and then moving to Canton, MA, where he would stay for the next 43 years.

Eduardo dedicated 38 years of his life to the Merchant Marines, cooking for his fellow crew members. Following his maritime career, he continued to serve his community, cooking at Norwood Hospital. He was also a devoted member of the Saint Gerard Majella Church, the Ideal Club, and the Blue Hills Civic Association.

Those who knew Eduardo will remember him as a man of great character, whose resilience was matched by his kindness. His stories, often infused with subtle humor and wisdom, were a gift to those who had the pleasure of listening. Even on his final evening, he joked with his family with a twinkle in his eye. Eduardo's absence will be profoundly felt by all who were fortunate enough to have their lives touched by his generous spirit.

As we say farewell to this wonderful man, we are reminded of the indelible mark he has left on his family and friends. May the memory of Eduardo Tavares be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all, and may he rest in peace.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Oscar Romero Church (formerly St. John’s) in Canton on Saturday morning, March 2, 2024 at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.

Donations may be made in his memory to VNA Hospice & Palliative Care, Development Office, 199 Rosewood Dr., Suite 180, Danvers, MA 01923-4539.
