Donald Russell Obituary

Donald M. Russell, age 92, of Bellingham, previously of Stoughton and Canton passed away June 17th.  Born in Norwood, he was raised in Canton and graduated from the Canton High School Class of 1948. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Albany. He worked as a Machinist for Masoneilan in Avon for 28 years before retiring. In his free time as a younger man, he enjoyed many hours fishing on the Cape Cod Canal and fly fishing in nearby waters. As time progressed, Don became and an avid musician and played the drums, washboard and ukelele. He played with the Stone Street Strummers Banjo Band in Walpole, the Parson Plunker Banjo Band in Attleboro, and the Blue Horizon Jazz Band. Don was known as a very social man who had a great sense of humor and was always quick to tell a joke or story. He was known to many by the hats he wore and in his later life was often seen at the Stoughton Bakery or the Bellingham Senior Center.

Beloved husband for 63 years to the love of his life, the late Reta M. (Brooks). Father of Gail M. Drew and her late husband John Drew of Bellingham, Gary R. Russell of Wrentham, Paul Brooks Russell and his wife Sue of Clinton, ME and Pamela J. Barros and her husband Anthony of Stoughton and the late Thomas Russell and his wife Lisa of Braintree. 

Brother of the late Thelma Loring, Muriel Lucier, Otis Russell, Phyllis Viola, and Ellery Russell. 

Don was also survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home located at 455 Washington St. in Canton on Friday morning June 23rd at 11:00 am. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm. Burial will be at Canton Corner Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Bellingham Senior Center located at 40 Blackstone Street Bellingham MA 02019.
