David Thomas Neas, lovingly known as "Grampy" to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by family at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Born on March 7, 1937, in Boston to the late Joseph and Agnes Neas, David was raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood and proudly graduated from the local high school.
David served his country as a member of the Air-Navy. Following his service, he became a skilled carpenter and sheet metal cutter, in the Boston area.
David’s vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. He had a big heart, a booming laugh, and a love for cowboy stories and Western movies. His passion for the outdoors led him on many camping and fishing adventures, especially with family. He also had a deep appreciation for good food and found great joy in sharing home-cooked meals with those he loved.
David was a devout Catholic whose faith grounded and guided him throughout his life. He was also a proud "Friend of Bill" for 37 years, and the strength he found in that fellowship was a testament to his resilience and dedication.
Above all, David cherished his family. He is survived by his son Michael Neas and daughter-in-law Carol of Old Saybrook and his daughter Paula Neas Cosgrove of Norwich. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Matthew Cosgrove of Winston Salem, NC; Kevin Cosgrove and wife Jamie Groves of Norwich, CT; Michael Neas of Essex Junction, VT; and Mia Neas of Bedford, NH. His great-grandchildren, David and Cece Cosgrove, brought immense joy to his golden years.
David’s sister, Eileen MacDonald of Berkley, also survives him, a bond that stood the test of time. He was predeceased by his siblings Veronica Sadatis, Eleanor Gottwald, Gerald, Edward, and Francis Neas.
To know David was to know a man of great humor, unwavering character, and immense love for his family. He was a storyteller, a protector—and a true original. His legacy will live on in the stories told around campfires, the meals shared with laughter, and the quiet strength he instilled in all who loved him.
The family wishes to extend a special “Thank you” to Jennifer Siakotos, of Hessco in Canton and Kristen Ferris, and the West Roxbury VA Hospital, for helping fiercely independent David remain in the comfort of his home during his final years
Big Grampy will be deeply missed—but his spirit will forever live on.
