Cleopatra "Cleo" Matthews, a beacon of love and intelligence, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2024, at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton. She embodied the warmth and dedication that touched everyone she knew. Cleo was the beloved wife of the late Alexander Matthews and a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who left a legacy of love and wisdom.
Born and raised in Roxbury, Cleo was a proud alumna of the Boston Schools, where she laid the educational foundation that would support a lifetime of achievements. She brought her sharp intellect and steadfast work ethic to her role as the Supervisor at State Street Bank in the Student Loan Department, where she worked for many years before her well-earned retirement. Her colleagues remember her as a guiding force, a mentor who elevated the standards of their work through her commitment and care.
Cleo's life was a testament to her devotion to her family. She was a matriarch in every sense, providing endless support and guidance. Though preceded in death by her husband Alexander, her son Stephen G. Matthews and his wife Carol, and her son Paul R. Matthews, her spirit lives on through her family. Cleo's legacy is lovingly carried forward by her daughter-in-law Suzanne Matthews of Canton; her grandchildren Michael Matthews of N. Dighton, Julia Mellon of Canton, Katharine Sneeringer of Canton, and Alexander Matthews of Canton; and her great-grandchildren Paul Mellon, Peter Mellon, John Mellon, Josephine Mellon, Wesley Sneeringer, Cameron Matthews, and Nolan Matthews.
Cleo will be remembered not only for her love and dedication to her family but also for her intelligence that shone brightly in every aspect of her life. She solved problems with grace, offered wisdom without hesitation, and approached every challenge with a calm, collected mind. Those who knew her were better for it, inspired by her determination and moved by her compassion.
As we bid farewell to Cleopatra "Cleo" Matthews, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. A life filled with purpose, with love, and with a brilliance that illuminated the lives of all who were privileged to know her. Her memory will be eternally cherished and her presence sorely missed. Though she has left this earthly realm, her spirit remains a guiding light for her family and all who loved her.
